and Communications Internship







Partners of the Americas, a
nonprofit organization engaged in development programs in the Western Hemisphere,
seeks an intern to support its Agriculture and Food Security (AFS) team. The
AFS team manages USAID programs focused on agriculture, economic development,
nutrition, and natural resource management. AFS works primarily in the
countries of Nicaragua, the Dominican Republic, Guatemala and Haiti.






Internship Description


Qualified candidates must be able to work a minimum of 15-20 hours
per week. AFS intern responsibilities include but are not limited to:





§  Draft
and disseminate press releases to relevant media outlets (primary
responsibility)


§  Assist
in drafting and posting blog stories each week;


§  Assist
in managing AFS social media accounts (i.e., Twitter, LinkedIn, etc.)


§  Assist
with drafting brochures, newsletter articles and other public outreach
documents;


§  Attend
public meetings and events hosted by local organizations and think tanks;


§  Other
duties as assigned.





Small
transportation stipend provided.





Requirements:


§ 
Strong writing skills
and attention to detail


§ 
Demonstrated
experience in communications and multimedia, specifically in drafting press
releases and communicating with local and national press


§ 
Ability to prioritize
tasks in order to meet deadlines


§ 
Degree in
communications, media, journalism, or related field preferred

Host Highlight: Universidad ISA (Dominican Republic)

Source: ISA As part of the USAID-funded Farmer-to-Farmer (F2F) program in the Caribbean basin, the Agriculture & Food Security (AFS) team at Partners of the Americas has been leading a project to increase climate change resilience across several vulnerable communities in the Dominican Republic. In order to carry out these efforts, Partners works with a wide array of host organizations ranging from agricultural cooperatives, nonprofits, as well as local universities. Among the multiple Dominican institutions of higher learning with which we work is worth highlighting one: Universidad ISA. In 1962, this institution was founded as the Instituto Superior de Agricultura or ISA. ISA was established by a partnership between USAID, the Asociación para el Desarrollo, Inc. (APEDI) and the national government of the Dominican Republic. F2F Country Highlight: Nicaragua

Since 2014, Partners of the Americas has facilitated 52 Farmer-to-Farmer volunteer trips to Nicaragua. F2F field staff, local hosts, and volunteers have worked hard to create collaborative solutions to complex community problems. Check out the incredible F2F partnerships we’ve formed in the past few months! Cattle and Dairy F2F volunteer Daniel Shaneyfelt give a lecture on improved cattle ranching techniques. Over the past 3 years, Partners has been working diligently with the Nicaraguan government, the  National Cattleman’s Commission of Nicaragua (CONAGAN), the Nicaragua Chamber of Beef Industry Exports (CANICARNE), and the Nicaraguan Chamber of the Dairy Sector (CANISLAC) to strengthen the domestic cattle and dairy industries from all ends of the value chain.
